Zojuist las ik een onderzoek waar bekeken is in hoeverre de resultaten van de zoekmachine-API's overeenkomen met de resultaten die we in de browsers te zien krijgen. Dat blijkt niet zo heel best te zijn. Het onderzoek stamt uit 2007, maar is volgens mij nog behoorlijk representatief.

Search Engines and Their Public Interfaces: Which APIs are the Most Synchronized?

Researchers of commercial search engines often collect data using the application programming interface (API) or by "scraping" results from the web user interface (WUI), but anecdotal evidence suggests the interfaces produce different results. We provide the first in-depth quantitative analysis of the results produced by the Google, MSN and Yahoo API and WUI interfaces. After submitting a variety of queries to the interfaces for 5 months, we found significant discrepancies in several categories. Our findings suggest that the API indexes are not older, but they are probably smaller for Google and Yahoo. Researchers may use our findings to better understand the differences between the interfaces and choose the best API for their particular types of queries.

Ik verwacht dat dit nog steeds zo is: wij hebben ook enige tijd geprobeerd om de resultaten automatisch uit te lezen. Google lijkt ook na langere tijd geen beperkingen op te leggen want we lazen per dag ongeveer 15.000 pagina's uit van Google. Waar je bij het uitlezen geen rekening mee kunt houden is de ranking op basis van persoonlijke instellingen die Google tegenwoordig toepast. Dat is trouwens pas een beperking.

Wij hebben in elk geval de conclusie getrokken dat het niet mogelijk is om een stabiel systeem op te bouwen en dus zijn we ermee gestopt.
